A TALE OF TWO DOORS

Take two old wood doors, a wife that loves interior design magazines/shows and a woodworking husband with a Lab full of Old Iron and what do you get? A new bed of course.

How do you make a bed from a set of doors? Pretty simple actually. Start by trimming the doors to size.

Then make some posts for the corners. I used 4/4 poplar. Cut them on a 45 and cut a dado for a spline. Then glue the four pieces together and instant post.

Go back to your door(s) and drill two hole for dowels. I prefer to use a brace and Stanley #59 drill guide. I can drill the holes almost as fast as my cordless but I get a better fit on the dowels with the auger bits. And I have never had a battery die while drilling.

Oh yea, drill mating holes in the posts you just built too.

Glue the bed and posts together. Then work on what ever trim you would like to finish is out. I went with some simple caps on the posts and strip across the top.... well, side of the door. Plug the holes for the locks and knobs too. I drilled them oversized and inserted dowels.

Make a set of rails with the hardware of your choice and test fit it all together.

Then start the fun part of the project. Sand the doors till your sick and tired of sanding. When you can't bear the thought to any more sanding your close, but not quite done!

Then you can clean everything really well to remove the dust and take it outside an paint it.

Next thing you know. It's all done and your wife loves you for making her idea a reality.

Now you know how to turn two doors into a bed!!
